I’ve Got the Sexiest Male Voice on Radio – Evablazin of UNILAG FM Boasts

Q.: Can we meet?
A.: My name is Nelson Fagbemi. I’m an On Air Personality with UNILAG 103.1 FM and also a Theatre Art student of the University of Lagos. Errr I’m 20 years old, that’s basically it.
Q.: How did you get the nick name Evablazin?
A.:*laughs* This question brings about funny memories. Errr, it was back in Secondary School, as usual I was the youngest in Class, but I was a “chicks man”, Everyone loved me, most especially the girls. But was a friend who I used to write Love Letters for that gave the name “Evablazin”, because I was a big fan of Sean Paul and he used to saying I was “Blazing for the girls”.
Q.: How did the journey into broadcasting start?

A.: It Started in 2010, January when I joined UNILAG FM as a sport analyst in the NBA(American Basketball), which I used as an opportunity to get into the radio even though that wasn’t what I wanted to do. I was a sport analyst for a couple of months and Big thanks to Seun Ajidagba who is the Head of Sports, I explained that I wanted to move into main stream presentation, which was obviously why I joined. And as a wonderful person that he was he agreed, so I moved from the sport department.
Q.: Why the interest in presentation?
A.: As a child the passion to make people happy at my own expense was said to be one of my major Flaws. Radio afforded that kind of opportunity without hurting myself or making myself uncomfortable. This I realized, because I derived maximum pleasure and love for listening to the radio. I used to record Olisa Adibua’s show and listen over and over again. And so I realized it was radio for me, it had to be radio. I have to make people happy. And so it was radio or nothing.
Q.: What has been the pains and gains? What are the challenges?
A.: I really don’t like to talk about challenges. There is no easy route to success. The joy I have when people call or text or tweet at me saying Thank you for making them happy just makes me happy. Money cannot buy that. Not that I don’t need money though. Also having to meet great mind, interviewing them as well is also great! Tiwa Savage, Dr. Sid, Solid Star , Yemi Alade are just a few. And the thought of being a celebrity also, you walking on the road, and you hear people whisper, that is Evablazin, his voice is so cool and so much more.
Q.: Tell us about your show?
A.: I’m the host of the Drive Time Show, which is from 4-6 on Tuesday, and the Saturday Request Show which is from 3-4. Drive Time Show is all about bringing my listener safe and sound from work home. Lot of Music, Traffic Report, Entertainment gist and juicy gossip, he-he-he-he, trust me I know how to do Olofofo. Saturday Request show is the chance for the listener to request for his/her favourite songs and I play them.
Q.: What’s your selling point?
A.: He-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he. There are so many, but majorly my Voice and I have a good sense of music. Colleagues call me a “Music Encyclopaedia”. I don’t have the normal husky kind of voice. But 9 out of 10 people I know find my voice sexy. I’m “Prince Charming”. He-he-he.
Q.: I Agree with that too lol! How will your rate your listening audience?
A.: Ahhh! I can’t say, but I have got a lot of listeners, Lot of calls, twitter mentions and SMS messages as well.
Q.: As a student, how you cope with education and work?
A.: Wow! This is a major challenge because, unlike every other course in the University, Theatre Arts is Time Consuming! There is either one Class or Rehearsal. There is no free time. But I’ve learned to manage my time well and effectively. Plus school doesn’t offer stability. You might be free from 4-6 this session but would have a class the following session. Which means, the time of your show has to be changed. But it is a challenge I love and I must say I’ve been coping well, and a student I know how to please my listener I know what they want because I’m in their midst.
Q.: How rewarding is it, financially N, otherwise?
A.: Chai financially the benefits are wonderful. Apart from the wages, I’ve being able to voice jingles for companies and was paid handsomely for it. So there is a lot of money in the business.
Q.: Role models?
A.: Rick Deez, Olisa Adibua. Great, great on-air personalities.
Q.: What keeps you going?
A.: Music. As an only child I’ve lived most of my life alone and music has always been there for me and will always be there. And also fine girls too.
