Couple charged with kidnapping, torture of 13-year-old relative

 

A Seattle-area couple is in custody for allegedly holding captive and torturing the man’s 13-year-old brother for three months – including driving a nail through the boy’s hand and keeping him in a cellar for days without food, the prosecutor said Wednesday.

Brandon Gunn, 27, and his wife Viviana, 34, are in the Kitsap County Jail outside Seattle on $500,000 bail each, charged with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and four counts of assault, county prosecutor Cami Lewis said.

Brandon’s brother is from Atlanta and went in May to stay with his brother for the summer, Kitsap County Deputy Sheriff Scott Wilson said.

Court orders extradition of Nigerian Al-Qaeda suspect to US

An Abuja Federal High Court on Wednesday ordered the extradition of a Nigerian Al-Qaeda suspect, Lawal Olaniyi Babafemi, to the United States of America, where he is wanted for alleged involvement in terrorism related activities.

The US Mission in Nigeria on Wednesday said in a statement that the US Department of Justice ‘unsealed’ an ‘indictment’ on Tuesday on Babafemi in the federal court in Brooklyn, New York, charging him with “providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation – al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.’’

Bin Laden doctor to face retrial

Officials in Pakistan have overturned the jail sentence and ordered a retrial of a doctor who helped the CIA in their search for Osama Bin Laden.

Shakil Afridi was charged with treason and tried under the tribal justice system for running a fake vaccination programme to gather information.

He was jailed for 33 years in May 2012 and has been held since then at Peshawar Central Jail.

Bin Laden was killed by US forces in Abbottabad in May 2011.

40 million Nigerians are unemployed – SURE-P

Chairman, Subsidy Reinvestment and Employment Programme, Dr. Christopher Kolade, on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, expressed worries over the high rate of unemployment in the land.

Kolade said no fewer than 40 million Nigerians were unemployed.

He spoke through the Technical Assistant to Community Services, Women and Youth Employment, SURE-P, Emeka Ekpunobi, during the one-day stakeholders sensitisation programme on Graduate Internship Scheme, by SURE-P in collaboration with Kalends Consulting.

He said the SURE-P was a platform through which the Federal Government planned to reduce unemployment.

Taraba assembly to Suntai: Go back to US hospital

Barely 24 hours after Governor Danbaba Suntai, addresed the people of Taraba State through a recorded video,  the state House of Assembly on Thursday  advised him to return to the hospital  in the United States where he was on admission for further treatment.

The assembly, in a statement by its Speaker, Haruna  Tsokwa, and 15 other  members, also reaffirmed Alhaji Garba Umar as the acting governor of the state.

The lawmakers   claimed  that  before Wednesday, all their  efforts  to meet with the recuperating governor, who arrived in Jalingo on Sunday from the  US,  were rebuffed by people close to him.

There was mayhem at the Seme border area of Lagos State on Thursday after a 35-year-old man, Saturday Joel, was shot by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service.

Eyewitnesses said Joel was hit by a stray bullet while some customs officers were trying to apprehend a motorist who was smuggling a red Volkswagen bus from Benin Republic into Nigeria.

The Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos State, has apprehended two brothers, Wasiu Bada and Nurudeen Bada, for the alleged murder of a 32-year-old tailor.

According to the police, the suspects and others at large were seen beating the deceased, Quadri Busari, with iron rods and clubs.

Navy kills six pirates, injures one

The joint patrol teams of the Nigerian Navy – NNS Jubilee, Akwa Ibom State, and NNS Victory, Calabar, Cross River State – said they killed six pirates in a gun duel on Tuesday.

It was learnt that a seaman, Barau Ibrahim, with NNS Victory, however, suffered gunshot wound on his hip.

But the navy injured and arrested one of the suspected sea pirates, who gave his name as Bassey Bassey.

Three-year-old girl raped in Niger

Niger State Police Command has arrested a man, Saliu Lawal, 25, for allegedly raping a three-year old girl.

The incident was said to have occurred on Friday August 23, 2013. It was learnt that the suspect, who was a next door neighbour to the parents of the victim, lured the girl into the premises of a primary school and raped her.

Sources told our correspondent that the little girl’s cries attracted passersby, who caught Saliu in the act.

EFCC arrests ex-banker for selling stolen broadcast content

He was also accused of manipulating Multichoice cards and allowing his clients to have free access to Multichoice signals.

Police nab man recording arrest of okada rider

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a medical representative, Gregory Muonylilo, for allegedly video recording policemen who were arresting a commercial motorcyclist.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was arrested at the Amuwo Odofin area of the state by policemen attached to Area E Command.

The policemen were said to have attempted to arrest a commercial motorcyclist for breaking the traffic law, while the suspect was recording the incident.

HORROR: Boy, 6, Has His Eyes Gouged Out After Being Kidnapped (PHOTOS)

A six-year-old Chinese boy had his eyes gouged out after reportedly being kidnapped by an organ trafficker. Family members found the youngster covered in blood some three to four hours after he went missing while playing outside his home. The child's eyes were found nearby but the corneas were missing, reports said, implying that an organ trafficker was behind the harrowing attack.

Police offered a 100,000 yuan ($16,000) reward for information leading to the arrest of the sole suspect, who they said was a woman.

"He had blood all over his face. His eyelids were turned inside out. And inside, his eyeballs were not there," his father told Shanxi Television. Its report showed the heavily-bandaged boy being taken from an operating theatre and placed in a hospital bed, writhing in agony as family members stood at his bedside weeping.

TRAGEDY: Husband, Wife And Their 2-Year-Old Baby Burn To Death

Three persons were burnt to death in a early morning inferno which razed down a apartment at Katsina Ala street, Makurdi, Benue state, on Tuesday.

The victims were 40- year old member of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Worker Terhemen Makar, his wife and a two- year old son who were completely burnt beyond recognition.

The only survivor of the inferno was a seven -year old son of the deceased who was rescued by sympathizers who forced open part of the building.

PHOTONEWS: Morning Downpour Floods Major Streets in Karu, Nasarawa State

Heavy showers in Abuja, FCT, and its neighbouring communities in the morning of August 27, Tuesday, caused flooding of some major streets in nearby Mararraba suburb of Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa state.

Karu is home to thousands of people, many of who work in Abuja.

Samaila Garba, a resident of Karu, told the reporters that the main road leading into residential areas in Mararraba was heavily flooded.

“Right now, water is everywhere, one cannot even walk on foot, not to talk of car or motor cycle,” he said.

However, he pointed out that the street has drainages on both sides, but “people dump all sort of things on the drainages and they are all blocked, so the water has nowhere to go except the road.”

Mr. Garba further revealed that apart from blocking the main road, the water is also “rushing into the houses located by the road side”.

Two British Nigerian woman have been detained in China for more than two months after their dream holiday turned to nightmare.

Modupe Idowu, 59, and her friend Esther Jubril Badmos, 48, were arrested after becoming embroiled in a dispute at a shoe shop in the city of Guangzhou.

They were locked up in ‘hell-like’ conditions at a detention centre for 38 days and although they have now been released, the two women remain trapped in the country as their visas have expired and authorities refuse to issue them new ones.

Samsung 'Galaxy Gear' Smartwatch Coming Sept. 4

Samsung will launch its smart watch, the Galaxy Gear, on Sept. 4 ahead of the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin, Germany.

Lee Young-hee, VP of Samsung's mobile business, confirmed the date and some details about the device in an interview with The Korea Times.

“We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on Sept. 4," Lee said.

Female Sex Education Teacher Rapes 14-Year-Old Student

A sexual education and health teacher at a Massachusetts high school has been indicted on rape charges after prosecutors said she had a sexual relationship with a student.

Rachelle Gendron, 27, was fired from her job at North Central Charter Essential School in Fitchburg following an investigation in which police allegedly recovered "significant" evidence of inappropriate conduct, including text messages and photos of the teacher "in various states of undress with genitals and breasts exposed," from the phone of a 14-year-old male student.

In court Friday, Gendron appeared crying and visibly shaken as she was arraigned on charges including five counts of rape aggravated by age difference.

As the search for the kidnapped Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, his driver and a All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain Athanasious Ugbomhe continues reports have surfaced that the kidnappers are demanding 150 million Naira for their freedom.

But sources have reported that his brother Pius told a confidant that no member of the family had been contacted as at Tuesday morning.

Man, 45, Dies While Having Sex

Banker, 45, died this weekend while engaging in sexual activities with his mistress at a hotel room in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The banker, an emloyee of a a commercial bank in the city, allegedly died in the course of having sex with his 21-year-old lover [names withheld]. The woman is a 200-level student of Micro-Biology at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

Ice Prince Acquires N46million Bentley GT Coupe (PHOTOS)

Celebrities and acquiring new cars seems to be the 'in thing' as Nigerian rapper, Ice Prince just acquired the Bentley GT Coupe said to be worth N46million, thereby joining the league of Bentley owners in Nigeria.

The car, which is a 2010 model, was not shipped but flown into the country. It landed in Nigeria just yesterday and reports say it cost another N4m to fly the car into the country.

Western strikes against Syria 'within days'

Syrian opposition leaders have been told by Western allies to expect military strikes against President Bashar al-Assad's regime within days, Reuters news agency reports.

According to the report, the Syrian National Coalition (SNC) was told in clear terms that "action to deter further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime could come as early as in the next few days".

The report on Tuesday came hours after the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, announced that he would recall parliament from summer recess to debate the situation in Syria in an emergency session on Thursday.

A 24-year old undergraduate student, Folajomi Agunbiade of the Ondo State University, Akungba-Akoko, was shot dead on Thursday, August 22 by armed robbers who were infuriated that she began to pray in tongues as they robbed her family.

Around 9 p.m., two armed robbers stormed the Agunbiade residence located in the Alasia-Amosun area of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

A family source said the armed bandits, who reeked of alcohol, took away six cell phones that were being charged at the time. The source added that neighbors were unaware of the robbers’ attack because the family’s noisy power generator was running at the time.

There Is No Need For ASUU To Continue Strike – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said there was no need for the Academic Staff Union of Universities to continue with their industrial action.

Jonathan said this at the inauguration of the Federal Government sponsored-Transformation Projects at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Represented by Prof. Ruqayyat Rufai, the Minister of Education, the president said N30 billion had been released for the payment of earned allowances in all public universities.

The president said that the inaugurated projects were in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to providing quality education in the country.

Meet 14-year-old Rising Football Star Who Aims to Make Nigeria Proud

The media has already classified Makanjuola Habib Abdulfatai (aged 14) as a complete blend of Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, C. Rolando and Fabregas all rolled in one.

This young Nigerian recently signed to play his football with Chelsea football club.

Makanjuola hails from Ifon in Osun State was born on April 19 1999. He started his football career with Niger United Football Academy and later moved to Water Football Academy in the FCT where he was invited to the National U-13 football team. He was part of the team that travelled to the UAE for an invitational tournament where he won the Most Valuable Player Award.
